Anorexia nervosa is a seemingly insignificant disease. “Anorexia people” would assert that weight loss is a personal preference…one that should not concern the family. However, anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that could have fatal effects. It is thus necessary to watch out for anorexia symptoms to avoid severe damage to the vital organs of the body that could eventually result in death.
Anorexia people often show very noticeable physical and psychological anorexia symptoms. Excessive weight loss is one of the anorexia symptoms. This is caused by improper eating. The afflicted have irregular meals, refuse to eat and often replace food with coffee or other diuretic drinks. There are also times when these people go on eating binges, consume inordinate amounts of food and feel guilty afterwards. Their fear of gaining weight often make them force the food out of their system by vomiting or by using laxatives.
It is very interesting to note that people suffering from anorexia often have an inaccurate impression of their body. Anorexics are usually under weight but they still consider themselves fat; they therefore weigh continuously and reduce food intake further. Anorexics try to hide their eating disorder by refusing to eat with other people. If ever they do eat with them they push the food around the plate, eat very slowly and pretend that they are also eating. In women, missing three consecutive menstrual periods is one of the anorexia symptoms. Less estrogen is produced as the body’s vital nutrients are considerably decreased by improper eating.
Anorexia symptoms include psychological and behavioral changes. Because weight loss is desired by anorexics, at the onset of anorexia, they would be outgoing, cheerful and full of self confidence. But as starvation increases, the dizziness, fatigue, insomnia and depression will set in. In some cases, the anorexic would want to be isolated from other people, fearing that he/she would be ridiculed because of their unsightly appearance. Some would be more dependent on family members and would perpetuate the eating disorder to force others to take care of them.
Early detection of anorexia symptoms is needed to treat this debilitating disease. Anorexia people open themselves to a lot of fatal diseases. People with anorexia nervosa simply cannot help themselves. It would be up to the family members to initiate treatment plans to save a loved one from the clutches of this eating disorder.
